spatial deconstruction #24 (wrapper), 2020 to 2021
ink pigment on polyester on columns
500 x 1000 x 150cm deep
RICHMOND TOWN HALL, Melbourne, Australia.
Curated by Grace Longato
The artist was invited by the City of Yarra, to create this ephemeral site specific intervention, which was created in response to the end of year celebrations.
Conceptually the building’s dominant features, the four symmetrical columns which intersect the street, were wrapped as a ‘gift’, in Coulter’s highly chromatic palette, in an effort to create a democratic gesture towards the holiday season, and the end of a socially challenging year.
Through her series of site-specific works, which the artist names ‘spatial deconstructions’, she reinvents the architecture, rendering it a painting and a support structure all at once. Embedded within the work, is also the social context, extending the work beyond formal concerns, and offering, subtle messages to the community. These are conveyed through the perceptual optics of colour sequences, and the repositioning of architecture.
