BIO + ARTIST STATEMENT
Emma Coulter, is an Australian artist, whose practice encompasses painting, sculpture and site-specific installation. Her practice explores the intersection of colour and space, through their democratic values, in transcending the hierarchical structures of culture, through the sometimes-paradoxical nature of art.
Having completed her undergraduate studies in visual art and the built environment at QUT, in Brisbane, 2000, she completed her Masters at VCA, in Melbourne in 2015. Subsequently Coulter has been awarded several grants, prizes, major public art projects, and museum installations.
2021, has seen the artist create her largest site-specific work to date, a 100-metre commission that wraps the Metro Tunnel’s building facade in central Melbourne.
In further recognition of her achievements, she has also received the Linden Art prize, the Footscray Art Prize, an Ian Potter cultural trust grant, multiple QUT Head of School awards, the VCA Jim Marks postgraduate scholarship and VCA Fiona Myer Award.
Notable commission works include a spatial deconstruction for the Museum of Brisbane Dome Gallery for New Woman, a centenary exhibition celebrating the work of ground-breaking female artists. A streetscape intervention on Richmond Town Hall’s facade, in Melbourne, a light projection on the William Jolly Bridge, as well as a permanent work in Burnett Lane, Brisbane CBD. Recently, the artist has also been included in QUT’s fourth Alumni Triennial at QUT Art Museum.
Coulters works have been exhibited nationally and internationally, at numerous institutional, commercial and artist-run spaces, as well as in situ in the public domain.
