By September 2023, Basel's Freilager Platz public Square will host Jeppe Hein's Aqua Pavilion, open to people of all ages.
The project, called Appearing Rooms, is described as liquid sculpture by Berlin-based artist Jeppe Hein. The installation has four external water walls that form a square, while inside, it is divided into smaller areas by four separate walls.
More than two meters high, walls made of flowing water undulate, determining who can enter and who must wait. Visitors can walk from one water space to another, or admire the surrounding squares, buildings, people and sky through transparent walls.
The work forms a living sculpture that can be experienced from the outside as well as the inside, inviting passers-by to linger and explore "its inner and outer worlds." The rhythm and sequence of the water wall is out of the control of the visitor, adding an element of surprise to the experience.
