HORIZON IS AN IMAGINARY LINE
An immersive light and sound installation in a vast dark space that evokes an ever-changing experience of nature and a sense of our own ephemerality. Projectors are used to create abstract shapes across the space filled with haze, appearing as tangible sculptures made of light. The sculptures wrap around visitors and continuously evolve from abstract to complex forms that emulate the vast scale of the universe and the sublimity of nature. Just like in the natural world, the light sculptures are made to constantly shift, and the same state is never repeated. The generative lights/projections are algorithmically composed to change continually and model the organic complexity of nature. Moving light beams are simultaneously physical and ephemeral, figurative and abstract, still and dynamic. The phenomenal experience of light and sound is nearly impossible to capture as they change based on the state of the fog and viewers' position.
The first piece of this kind was created in 2013 as part of Maja Petric's Ph.D. dissertation on Transforming the Poetic Experience of Space Through Light that investigated theoretical and practical artistic methods of expanding the perceptual hyperspace through algorithmic light.
The generative soundscape was composed by Daniel Peterson. It is an electroacoustic counterpoint to the experience of kinetic light that enhances the ambiance of space by appearing at the threshold of perception and then morphing over time.
