URBAN INSTALLATION

The “Fallas” are a feast located in Valencia and known worldwide. In a few concrete days, the city transforms. The road traffic disappears but not by it the city is paralyzed, on the contrary, this one becomes more frantic: parties, passacaglias, fireworks, and many people visiting the sculptures that appears in the crossings of the streets. Those ephimeral sculptures serve to do critique of what happens in the society and must burn the night of March 19.

In 2015 we were contracted by the commission of the Falla Castielfabib to elaborate a ”Falla”, in some way, an urban ephemeral installation. We were worried about the way the sculpture takes its space in the city. During the days of Fallas the public space is reduced by the use of fences and tents for the protection of monuments, a situation aggravated by the increasing number of bystanders. In our proposal, we wanted to offer an alternative to this situation and returning the city to citizens and include them in the celebration. We think that it´s appropriate that the monument allow the possibility of approaching and touching it without restrictions. We decided to take a figure of an elephant for the Falla, which could bring children and play with it, thus eliminating physical barriers.

We wanted to avoid the use of expanded polystyrene, commonly used, whose combustion is so polluting and unpleasant, and instead use other cleaner-burning product. The materials used are recycled cardboard tubes, which are stacked to form a cell pattern that recomposes the silhouette of the animal.

We offered the possibility that whoever wanted to, he could write their desires, their dreams in color papers and bring them into the holes of the tubes forming the figure. Thus, the installation becomes participatory, interacting with the observer, while the Falla is acquiring color, a must for the holidays.
