Helen Diller Civic Center Playground
Within San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza, ACLA designed two playgrounds overlooking City Hall. Close collaboration with the Trust for Public Land and the Department of Recreation and Parks provides an inviting and safe place for families to play in densely populated neighborhoods and has helped catalyze change in challenged urban areas. The playground is unique and ingenious, an interpretation of the San Francisco fog movement.
Swooping and durable steel components spiral and twist while stretching a net of blue and silver across the playground. Children climb over the cloud-like net to reach the platform and slide, with views of the square to City Hall.
On the largest structure, three layers of play mesh are connected to each other by punched funnels and wrap around the walkway, creating a secret hiding place in the sky, perfect for tag games.
A forest of slender pixel poles lines the eastern edge of the main pedestrian corridor and the square, with "Carl" interactive lighting activating the adjacent Spaces between the playgrounds. Both were designed in collaboration with Anti-Clockwise Arts, with interactive and pulsing lights creating a living atmosphere that carries the project through the night and provides additional lighting to the plaza.
The new playground now has a dual identity - an iconic space that attracts visitors, large school groups and nurseries, as well as a daily play space for individual families to enjoy.
The board of the Helen Diller Family Foundation and the collaborative process with the Trust for Public Land and the San Francisco Department of Recreation and Parks have encouraged inter-agency coordination and community engagement in this challenging area.
The original goal of the playground was to create an inspiring, fun and safe place for families. Their role has evolved into a catalyst for the regeneration of the surrounding community.
"The San Francisco Civic Center is cleaner and safer now - a place to play and get something to eat...... The progress of the Civic Center to date can serve as a model for future efforts to redo dilapidated urban corridors."- San Francisco Chronicle, October 23, 2018
