AN INSTALLATION THAT ENABLES VISITORS’ MOVEMENTS TO CONTROL THE CHANGE IN LIGHTING.
LONDON, UK – 2012
EXPERIENCE
This experimental interactive lighting design project created a band of white light which physically followed the visitor, forming a bright line of light tracking his/her journey. As one person passed, the white light jumped to the next arrival. Either side of the white band, washes of strong colour were pushed and pulled along the tunnel, creating an ambient lighting effect that represented the overall ebb and flow of the traversing visitors. Throughout the day, these colours shifted in hue and saturation, as they responded to the prevailing direction of the crowds’ movement.
Using a combination of technologies, including thermal camera tracking and Philips LED lighting mounted on a moving monorail, 'Walk the Light' demonstrated lighting design’s increasing sophistication as it playfully and beautifully transformed the arrival experience at the Victoria & Albert Museum.
'Walk the Light' was a site specific installation at the Victoria & Albert Museum commissioned for the London Design Festival 2012 and sponsored by Philips Lighting.
