Interactive Physical Pixels That Break The Confines Of The Screen (2012)
The fundamental unit of dynamic visual representation in our contemporary culture is the pixel. Pixels appear as non-spatial, microscopic, flat blinking dots comprising larger images and video. They are composed of red, green, and blue subpixels; the colors combining to create the familiar gamuts of light all around us. They pack regularly, small squares forming grids: 640 × 480, 1024 × 768, 1280 × 720, 1920 × 1080, 3840 × 2160, etc.
But pixels don't need to be this way, nor do the ubiquitous display surfaces slowly panelling as much of the horizontal built environment as possible. There could have been round, for instance. And in the future, they will creep from their rectilinear jails and seep into the everything, splatters and swaths rather than rectangles.
Resolution is a physical, interactive display where the audience is encouraged to reshape the agents of the screen, the pixels themselves.
